In a stunning defensive play, Victor Wembanyama blocked Jalen Green’s dunk attempt in the Spurs-Rockets matchup, underscoring his shot-blocking dominance this season. Meanwhile, Chris Paul delivered a respectful tribute to Coach Gregg Popovich, highlighting the impact Popovich’s leadership has had on his career.
Victor Wembanyama Shuts Down Jalen Green’s Dunk Attempt, Displaying Unmatched Defensive Prowess
Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green found himself in a highlight moment on November 6 night, though not how he might have envisioned. Early in the Rockets' game against the San Antonio Spurs at Toyota Center, Green received a bounce pass from teammate Fred VanVleet. Without hesitation, he elevated for what he hoped would be a poster-worthy dunk. However, towering at 7'3" with an 8-foot wingspan, Victor Wembanyama stood in his path. Green attempted to power through, but Wembanyama, who leads the NBA in blocks this season, swatted the ball away with authority, per Sports Illustrated.
Wembanyama’s defensive prowess was well-established going into the game; he leads the league with 27 total blocks this season, averaging 3.9 blocks per game. Last season, he topped the NBA in blocks per game with a 3.6 average, which outpaced the second-leading shot-blocker by a notable margin.
Despite Green’s thwarted dunk attempt, the Rockets had the upper hand in the first half, heading into the break with a commanding 63–38 lead.
Chris Paul Reflects on Gregg Popovich’s Legacy as Spurs Adjust to His Absence
Meanwhile, the Spurs are adjusting to a significant absence as longtime head coach Gregg Popovich steps away indefinitely due to health reasons. It marks Popovich's first extended absence since he became head coach in 1996. His absence has affected the team, with veteran point guard Chris Paul, who joined San Antonio over the summer, acknowledging Popovich's impact on his career.
"I've only been with the team a few months, but I’ve admired Pop my entire career," Paul told the media. "He’s one of the best if not the best, and he always puts everything into perspective. He’s incredibly selfless, always reminding us of the privilege we have to play in the NBA. He’d tell us not to worry about him and to just play. But of course, we all miss him—he brings a presence that comforts everyone in the room."
With Popovich sidelined, assistant coach Mitch Johnson has stepped in as acting head coach. Under Johnson's guidance, the Spurs have gone 1-1 and are currently 3-4 overall.
