OnePlus 7 is expected to be OnePlus’ next flagship smartphone due to come out this year. The company has yet to announce the device’s other features but it is widely speculated to offer a bigger RAM compared to OnePlus 6T.
Various reports on OnePlus 7 almost constantly mentions 8GB RAM as the most possible feature. It is highly possible since the OnePlus 6T already has a variant with an 8GB RAM upgrade. In OnePlus 7’s case, however, some speculate that the 8GB RAM might actually be part of the base model's configuration. This means the upcoming device might have a variant with a much bigger RAM option.
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau previously confirmed that OnePlus 7 will be powered with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855. The chipset has the capacity to support up to 16GB RAM.
It is very unlikely for OnePlus to max out that RAM allowance. However, there are several reports suggesting that OnePlus 7 might have a variant that could offer 10GB to 12GB RAM. Note, though, that these are speculations. And if these will not pan out for OnePlus 7, it could still be a possibility for OnePlus 7T.
Meanwhile, another confirmed upgrade for OnePlus 7 is the addition of 5G support. And while having a device compatible with the fastest cellular connectivity yet would be cool, the fact is, the availability of 5G is still quite limited, especially in regions outside North America.
To cater to smartphone fans who can do without the 5G feature, for now, Lau confirmed to TechRadar they will also launch a 4G version of the OnePlus 7 this year. “Because 5G will be very much for a small unique portion of enthusiasts, we'll have a 4G product also developed and available in parallel,” Lau further explained. The OnePlus CEO then hinted at a $200 to $300 price gap between the 5G and 4G models of OnePlus 7.
Meanwhile, there is not much news yet about the possible changes in the design of OnePlus 7. But the company has already launched the in-display fingerprint scanner feature on the OnePlus 6T. It is safe to expect that it will be carried on to the next flagship smartphone possibly arriving within the first half of 2019.
