‘Outcast’ creator Robert Kirkman discussed his new horror series focusing on demonic possession. The 37-year old is best credited for bringing the critically acclaimed ‘The Walking Dead’ to life on the small screen as well as executive producing its spin-off ‘Fear the Walking Dead’.
According to Variety, the brand new series created by Kirkman explores demonic possession around a local community in a small southern town and mainly focuses on Kyle Barnes (Patrick Fugit), a young man haunted by a spirit since he was a child. Kirkman adapted the series from the comics of the same name, which he co-created with Paul Azaceta.
When asked about how his new series would be different from others with the same theme, he replied, “I feel like one, there’s plenty of room in the genre just like there’s plenty of room in the zombie genre… I think that “Outcast” is an exorcism story, it deals with demonic possession, but I think that it’s got its own mythology; it’s got its own different kind of angles that it takes into that story matter, and is definitely going to be telling much different stories than you would expect us to tell, so I think there’s room for all this stuff.”
The Cinemax series, produced by Fox International Studios, aired its pilot episode on June 3. Episode 1, entitled "A Darkness Surrounds Him", was directed by Adam Wingard. According to A.V Club, it went on to deliver violence, shock, and evil almost immediately with its opening scene.
Episode 1 found Kyle forced to return to his ramshackle home in Rome, West Virginia. In his isolation, he experiences flashbacks of a disturbing childhood under the hands of his presumably possessed mother. He later learns of a young boy who is experiencing demonic possession.
Throughout the episode, it is revealed that Kyle is continually being haunted by an evil entity, which seemed to follow him around since he was a child. He uses his experience to confront the demons and help exorcise the young boy together with Reverend Anderson (Philip Glenister), a small town preacher specializing in demonic possession.
According to Bustle, Kirkman admitted that the continuous feeling of dread makes the show appealing. He said, “It’s a much creepier, much more foreboding dread that’s in this town that centers around this phenomenon that’s happening around them… But this is very much an unexpected show that goes into some places you're not going to be able to anticipate.”
‘Outcast’ is a brand new horror television series that debuted on Cinemax on June 3. Season 1 episode 2, entitled "(I Remember) When She Loved Me", is scheduled to air on June 10, 2016.
