‘Outlander’ lead actor Sam Heughan revealed that he was excited to meet the adult version of Lord John from the original ‘Voyager’ book authored by Diana Gabaldon. He also teased that season 3 will feature a “completely different” Jamie.
According to Chatt Sports Net, Heughan admitted that he was excited to meet one specific character in the incoming season of the historical time travel series based on Diana Gabaldon’s novels of the same name.
During a Q&A session on Twitter, he was asked about his favorite character on ‘Voyager’, Gabaldon’s third book in the series. He said, “John Grey is going to be interesting to meet…!” Lord John William Grey was first introduced in season 2’s episode “Je Suis Priest” as a young master who mistook Claire as Jamie’s prisoner after meeting them on the eve of the Battle of Prestonpans. John and Jamie are set to meet again 20 years later and will form a friendship.
According to Cinema Blend, John is the main character in Gabaldon’s spin-off ‘Lord John’ series that takes place between 1756 and 1761 during the events of ‘Voyager’. He was portrayed by Oscar Kennedy in season 2 of the television adaptation.
Season 3 is reportedly based on Gabaldon’s ‘Voyager’, the third book in the series published in 1993. In the original bestselling novel, Claire is living in Boston in the year 1968. She traces Jamie’s life with their daughter Brianna after she finds out that he survived the Battle of Culloden during the Jacobite uprising of 1745. She then finds herself at the stone circle that sent her back to the past.
Meanwhile, John reappears as the governor of Ardsmuir Prison where Jamie is held captive. It turns out that John is secretly homosexual and has feelings for Jamie. Eventually, the two strike up an unusual friendship.
It remains unconfirmed whether Kennedy will be returning to reprise his role as an adult version of Lord John or if the role will be given to a different actor altogether. Heughan returns to reprise his role as Jamie Fraser while Caitriona Balfe will be back to portray Claire Randall/Fraser.
Season 2’s finale saw Jamie and Claire’s separation. It was reported that the two are bound for a bittersweet reunion in the incoming season. According to Morning Ledger, Heughan teased that his character would have become a completely different person by then after losing the love of his life.
‘Outlander’ is a historical drama television series developed by Ronald D. Moore and produced by Sony Pictures Television and Left Bank Pictures. It first aired on Starz on August 9, 2014. The network renewed the series for a third season on June 2016.
