The Philippine and United States militaries conducted a joint sail and maritime exercises this week at the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, underscoring the growing defense cooperation between the two long-standing treaty allies. According to the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the activity took place within waters that fall inside the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, an area also claimed by China as part of its territory.
This latest joint sail marked the 11th “maritime cooperative activity” between the Philippines and the United States since November 2023, highlighting a sharp increase in bilateral military engagement. Philippine defense officials said the exercises were designed to strengthen interoperability, coordination, and tactical readiness between allied forces operating in strategically sensitive waters.
During the operation, the Philippines deployed the frigate BRP Antonio Luna, a Philippine Coast Guard offshore patrol vessel, two military aircraft, and a helicopter. The United States Indo-Pacific Command contributed the USS John Finn, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, along with an MH-60R Seahawk helicopter. The combined naval and air assets demonstrated enhanced joint operational capability and mutual support in maritime security missions.
In an official statement, the Philippine armed forces said the successful conduct of the activity improved coordination, tactical proficiency, and mutual understanding between Philippine and U.S. forces. The joint exercise also reinforced the allies’ shared commitment to freedom of navigation and a rules-based order in the South China Sea, one of the world’s most important and contested maritime regions.
Military cooperation between Manila and Washington has expanded significantly under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who has moved to deepen defense ties with the United States amid China’s growing presence and assertive actions in the South China Sea. China claims sovereignty over nearly the entire sea, overlapping with the exclusive economic zones of the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia, and continues to reject competing claims.
The latest joint sail at Scarborough Shoal reflects the Philippines’ efforts to bolster maritime security and regional stability through alliances, while signaling continued U.S. engagement in the Indo-Pacific amid rising geopolitical tensions.
