One would think that an announcement involving the PlayStation 5 would please fans, but it would seem that Sony only succeeded in dividing the community. This new issue has to do with the fact that the upcoming console will be backward compatible with the PlayStation 4 and only the PlayStation 4. The firm basically flipped the bird at its customers, especially its most hardcore and ardent gamers.
The features for the upcoming console have already made it to the wild, GameSpot reports. While some of them do sound promising, others are much less so. In particular, the matter of the backward compatibility of the PlayStation 5 only with games in the PlayStation 4. This is already not sitting well with many of the oldest customers of the company’s home video game business.
For some context into this story, fans have been clamoring for Sony to offer backward compatibility with its game boxes since the PS3. The PS2 actually offered it for PS1 games, but since then, the feature has mysteriously gone to the toilet. When the announcement for the PlayStation 5 was coming, many were hoping that this would change, but it simply did not deliver everything that fans wanted.
To be fair, offering to support PS4 games with the PlayStation 5 is a step in the right direction. At the very least, it would mean that new gamers will not have to get a PS4 and the next generation console in order to enjoy games from both. However, there are also a ton of classic games from the PS1 all the way through the PS3 era that fans would like to play on the PlayStation 5.
These are the people who Sony disappointed upon revealing the PlayStation 5 details. Then again, this is quite early on in the game, so the company might just surprise fans in the upcoming months.
