Next year is shaping up to be a major one for the gaming industry with both Sony and Xbox anticipated to launch its respective next-generation consoles. It is going to be a big showdown, but reports have it that PlayStation 5 and the product of Project Scarlett would most likely offer similar hardware specs and performance. In this case, having a hefty lineup of compatible and exclusive games could be a deciding factor on who wins the looming battle of new consoles.
PlayStation 5’s possible advantage: Sony eyes buying more game studios
The most effective way to beef up exclusive games lineup is to acquire well-known video game studios, something that Sony and Microsoft have both been doing in the previous years. Both companies have very recognizable first-party titles, and some of it will have sequels in the near future that would fit the possible release date timeline for PlayStation 5 and the still unnamed Project Scarlett console.
Sony is still looking to expand the list of studios under its brand. “Companies new to the games industry looking at the market with hope is something we definitely welcome,” Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan told Nikkei (via Gematsu). “Sony Interactive Entertainment has 25 years of experience in the games industry and has big assets.”
Meanwhile, even without the new studios, PlayStation 5 is already looking to have a hefty games lineup just based on the already announced and anticipated titles in 2019 and in the next couple of years. Hideo Kojima’s much-awaited “Death Stranding” is arriving on Nov. 8 exclusively on PS4 but since SIE is publishing it, there is a big chance that making it available on PlayStation 5 is on the cards. Other blockbuster PS-exclusive titles such as “Ghost of Tsushima” and “The Last of Us Part 2” are also most likely going to launch on PlayStation 5 in the near future.
Sony can also become aggressive in securing exclusivity deals with other video game companies. An information leak from late 2018 suggested that Sony is negotiating with Rockstar Games to have “GTA 6” launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 before it is released on other platforms.
PlayStation 5 release date could be in 2020
Sony has at least confirmed that PlayStation 5 is being developed as its next-generation console. Its CPU and GPU are going to be custom components by AMD based on Ryzen and Navi platforms, respectively. Lead system architect Mark Cerny told Wired that the console would not be released in 2019 while there are some clues that the official launch could happen in 2020.
