As one of the largest hosts of porn content on the web, Pornhub gets quite a bit of traffic from users who like to get frisky. Now, the site is thinking of using artificial intelligence in order to streamline its services and deliver porn more efficiently. This development just proves how AI is invading pretty much every aspect of life and in the most unexpected ways.
The platform essentially wants to use machine learning to recognize particular images or clips and then tag users who might be interested in them, The Verge reports. Pornhub is starting with faces, with over 10,000 porn stars being the main subject of interest. Any video featuring these figures would then be cataloged appropriately and tagged.
Over the next year, the site wants to scan all five million videos on its domain with just the goal of identifying the porn stars in them. After that, Pornhub is thinking of moving on to other, more specific categories such as “blond” or “teen.”
As to why the platform decided to go the AI route, Pornhub VP Corey Price said in a statement that they are simply joining the tech bandwagon of leaving antiquated methods behind. These methods basically involved having users or uploaders tag individual videos with appropriate labels to make searching for them much easier.
It’s worth pointing out that this use of AI might not work for every porn star. As Engadget points out, many performers wear masks when doing their job and machines won’t be able to identify them by face. There’s also the huge concern of certain individuals who are not exactly porn stars getting tagged and their identities being spread.
There are cases of revenge porn videos making it to porn sites, after all. Pornhub has made an effort to address this particular problem, but certain clips still slip through the cracks.
