Posco Holdings and LG Electronics are partnering to revolutionize their facilities into advanced smart factories, leveraging AI, robotics, and wireless technology. The joint effort aims to improve safety, operational efficiency, and accessibility, propelling their recognized Lighthouse Factories into the forefront of Fourth Industrial Revolution developments.
Posco Holdings and LG Electronics said that improving safety inspections, the efficiency of operations, and facility management through the use and integration of artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and wireless technologies are part of their goals as well.
As per Korea Joongang Daily, the companies are envisioning a production plant where autonomous robots are programmed to do works that were previously carried out by humans. By filling smart factories with the latest technologies, it will be easier for workers to do their duties as they will be provided with devices to assist with the tasks.
The project will also give them equipment that will allow them to easily communicate with each other wirelessly. Additionally, LG Electronics and Posco Holdings expect autonomous robots to help humans access some areas that are previously unreachable to them, and through the wireless communication systems, employees will be able to manage work conditions in the facilities much better.
The partners held a signing ceremony to seal their deal on smart factories this week. They agreed to co-develop new technologies related to automation that can be used in their respective manufacturing plants. The Korea Economic Daily reported that the event took place at LG Electronics' Seocho R&D Campus in Seoul.
It was noted that Posco Holdings and LG Electronics’ production facilities were both recognized by the World Economic Forum (WEF) as Lighthouse Factories, which refer to a community of manufacturers that pioneer developments and show leadership in the use of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies to transform facilities, value chains, and business models.
Posco’s Pohang Plant is the first Korean company to be recognized by the WEF while LG Electronics’ factory in Tennessee was also recognized as a Lighthouse Factory earlier this year and became the Korean plant overseas to get the same recognition.
