Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed support for a U.S.-proposed ceasefire in Ukraine but insisted on key conditions, raising doubts about an immediate resolution. The war, which began in February 2022, has caused massive destruction, displacing millions and straining global relations.
Speaking after talks with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Putin acknowledged the ceasefire’s potential but emphasized the need for guarantees ensuring lasting peace. He stressed that underlying causes must be addressed to prevent Ukraine from using the pause to regroup.
U.S. President Donald Trump, pushing for a diplomatic breakthrough, called Putin’s response "very promising." Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is in Moscow negotiating the proposal, which Ukraine has already accepted. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy accused Putin of stalling, fearing rejection could damage relations with Trump.
Territorial disputes remain a major hurdle. Russia demands Ukraine cede occupied regions, which Kyiv firmly opposes. Trump hinted at ongoing discussions about territorial control, including the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. Meanwhile, Putin remains adamant that any deal must secure Russia’s interests and prevent NATO expansion.
Moscow’s recent offensive in western Russia further complicates talks. Putin, making a rare appearance in military attire, questioned how a ceasefire would impact Russian gains, particularly in the Kursk region, where Ukraine's control has significantly dwindled.
With the U.S. resuming arms support for Kyiv, Putin remains cautious, seeking assurances before making a final decision. A potential phone call between Trump and Putin could shape the next phase of negotiations. Global leaders continue to monitor developments, as any agreement—or its failure—will have lasting geopolitical consequences.
