Former NBA champion Rick Fox has officially joined the Bahamian Senate after being appointed by the opposition Free National Movement (FNM). The announcement came shortly after Fox failed in his campaign to secure a seat in the Bahamian House of Assembly during the recent general election.
The FNM confirmed the appointment on its official Facebook page, introducing Fox as one of the opposition’s representatives in the country’s 16-member Senate. Under the Bahamian political system, four Senate seats are reserved for members nominated by the opposition party.
Rick Fox, widely recognized for his successful basketball career in the NBA, played 14 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics. The former forward became a three-time NBA champion with the Lakers, helping the team win consecutive titles from 2000 to 2002 before retiring from professional basketball in 2004.
Born in Canada to a Bahamian father and Canadian mother, Fox has maintained strong ties to The Bahamas throughout his life. In recent years, he shifted his focus toward public service and Bahamian politics. In 2022, the governing Progressive Liberal Party appointed him as an ambassador-at-large, marking his first major political role in the country.
Fox later joined the opposition FNM and launched a campaign to represent the Garden Hills constituency in parliament. Although he was unsuccessful in the election, his Senate appointment keeps him active in national politics and positions him to influence legislative discussions in the Bahamas.
The former NBA star has not yet publicly commented on his new role. However, his appointment has already generated attention both locally and internationally, with many viewing his transition from professional sports to politics as a significant step in his evolving career.
