Rivian Foundation Launches New Website, Awards $10 Million to 41 Global Conservation Projects

A few years after Rivian initially disclosed its intentions for the project, the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer disclosed its initial award recipients for grants from its philanthropic arm.

The company launched a dedicated website on September 23 that provides information about the Rivian Foundation. According to Teslarati, the foundation was initially announced in 2021 to fund conservation and sustainability initiatives. Rivian has announced the initial 41 grant recipients, most of whom are in the United States. These recipients will receive more than $10 million in funding throughout one- and two-year projects.

The awards vary in value, ranging from $2 million to lesser grants between $40,000 and $60,000, with several other totals in between. The Rivian Foundation also provides initiatives with a diverse geographic scope, including those in specific U.S. states, across the country, or North America as a whole, and more global endeavors.

The Nature Conservancy was the primary recipient of the $2 million award, which was granted as part of a two-year initiative to safeguard cultural resources and preserve biodiversity in California. Other high-value beneficiaries included the Alliance for Tribal Clean Energy, a U.S.-based organization, and the global Ocean Resilience Climate Alliance (ORCA), which received $1 million and $500,000, respectively.

Rivian Commits 1% of Equity to Environmental Initiatives, Launches Renewable Energy Matching Program

Rivian pledged to allocate one percent of its equity to the foundation's initiatives during its initial public offering (IPO) as part of its objective to elevate the "natural world" to the status of a stakeholder.

On September 23, Rivian also disclosed a renewable energy matching initiative. Under this initiative, the company will acquire 4.8 MWh of renewable energy certificates (RECs) from U.S. wind and solar projects for each vehicle it sells by the end of the year. The company also disclosed its preliminary carbon footprint report for the R1 Gen 2 this month, indicating that the newly refreshed EVs have resulted in a 15% reduction in the vehicle's carbon footprint.
