Rivian (RIVN), with less than three weeks until the R2's official debut, has affirmed that the more affordable electric SUV will be available in Europe.
Rivian Teases Compact and Affordable R2 SUV Ahead of European Expansion
A week after launching the R2 website, Rivian unveiled the new electric vehicle as a teaser video.
The indistinct image depicts a miniature R1S variant consistent with previous observations. Rivian submitted a patent application last month that delineated a more compact electric SUV featuring a rear quarter panel and slightly reduced headlamps.
They appear identical to the clay model Rivian previously unveiled. RJ Scaringe, chief executive officer of Rivian, stated that the R2 will retain the "essence of the brand" while being more compact and affordable.
Beginning between $40,000 and $50,000, Rivian's R2 is priced nearly half as much as its R1S and R1T. Last Thursday, the electric SUV was reportedly observed filming in downtown Los Angeles.
Image posted by Electrek from Daniel Aland Obtaining information that is the R2. Compared to the R1S, it appears marginally more compact due to its reduced-size headlamps. Additionally, it is worth noting that the charging receptacle is located on the passenger side. In addition, new rims and less chrome are included.
In anticipation of the launch of Rivian in Europe, the manufacturer has affirmed that the R2 will be available in the region. Rivian confirmed to Auto Express that the R2 will be offered in the United Kingdom.
Several European countries, including Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, France, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, and the Netherlands, are listed under locations on the Rivian R2 page. The website displays the following beneath the R2 teaser video: "Rivian is coming to Europe," along with a link to subscribe to news notifications.
The company states that prices and delivery times will be disclosed only in the United States and Canada. Still, it does offer the option to receive notifications "when we begin accepting pre-orders in Europe."
Rivian will formally unveil the R2 at its new Laguna showroom at 10 a.m. PST on March 7. Return at that time for the complete details. The $5 billion Georgia manufacturing facility where the new model will be assembled is scheduled to commence production in 2026.
Rivian's R2 Set to Boost Global Presence, Tackling Europe's EV Market
Already being distributed throughout Europe, Rivian's electric delivery vehicles for Amazon also raise the question of why not passenger EVs. As flagship products, the R1S and R1T assisted Rivian in establishing its brand and generating some revenue flow. Rivian now believes that the R2 will facilitate its mainstream entry. It will contend with the market's best-selling vehicles, such as the Hyundai IONIQ 5, the Tesla Model Y, and the Kia EV6.
Although Rivian's current lineup primarily caters to the United States and Canada, a more compact electric SUV such as the R2 would presumably find favor in Europe.
Scaringe declared R2 to be an international EV platform. The decision to expand internationally will contribute to the growth of the brand. According to online posts from various regions, Russian vehicles are already in high demand in Europe. Although the R1S and R1T might be excessively large, the R2 might be the optimal dimensions for a worldwide expansion.
