Russia has intensified its offensive against Kostiantynivka, a strategically important city in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, as the Kremlin continues its long-running campaign to seize full control of eastern Ukraine. While Russian advances across much of the 1,200-kilometer front line have slowed, the battle for Kostiantynivka has emerged as one of the most critical flashpoints in the war.

Ukrainian military commanders say fighting has reached the city’s outskirts, with small groups of Russian troops attempting to infiltrate residential areas. Although Kyiv insists these incursions have been contained, officials warn that close-quarters urban combat could escalate if Russian forces continue pressing forward.

Kostiantynivka forms the southern anchor of Ukraine’s heavily fortified defensive network, often referred to as the "fortress belt," alongside Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, and other key settlements. Capturing the city would give Russia a valuable position from which to expand operations deeper into the Donetsk region, aligning with President Vladimir Putin’s stated objective of securing the entire territory before the conflict ends.

Military analysts note that Russia continues to benefit from its manpower advantage despite suffering increasing losses from Ukrainian drone strikes targeting supply lines, logistics hubs, and infrastructure. Emil Kastehelmi of Finland’s Black Bird conflict analysis team said the strikes have disrupted Russian operations but have not significantly weakened Moscow’s ability to sustain offensives in selected sectors.

Ukrainian commanders rejected Putin’s recent claim that Russia is close to fully capturing Kostiantynivka, stating that their forces continue eliminating Russian infiltration teams before they can establish positions inside the city. Major General Viktor Nikoliuk, head of Ukraine’s eastern operational command, said the city remains capable of holding its defenses provided current manpower and supplies are maintained.

The Institute for the Study of War has also assessed that although the tactical situation is becoming increasingly difficult for Ukraine, Russian forces have not yet achieved conditions necessary for a rapid operational breakthrough. However, analysts caution that Moscow’s gradual encirclement strategy is steadily increasing pressure on Ukrainian defenders.

According to Ukrainian military analysts, Russian troops are attempting to envelop Kostiantynivka through coordinated pincer movements designed to stretch Ukrainian resources and isolate supply routes. This strategy could eventually force Kyiv to choose between reinforcing the city with additional troops or conducting a tactical withdrawal to preserve combat strength.

Russia is simultaneously increasing pressure farther north along the defensive belt, where the cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk have come under frequent drone and air attacks. Ukrainian supply corridors connecting these positions are being targeted with artillery, guided bombs, and unmanned aerial vehicles, complicating troop movements and logistics.

Reuters journalists accompanying Ukraine’s "Predator" rifle brigade observed the growing danger along the main road leading north from Kostiantynivka. Fiber-optic cables used to control first-person-view drones now cover anti-drone netting above the highway, while unmanned ground robots increasingly transport food, water, and ammunition through areas considered too dangerous for conventional vehicles.

Soldiers stationed along the route say evacuating casualties has become increasingly difficult due to persistent drone attacks. Serviceman Oleksandr Kosmin explained that many rescue operations must now be conducted entirely on foot because vehicles are immediately targeted once they enter the combat zone.

The deteriorating security situation has also forced more civilians to flee nearby communities. In Druzhkivka, roughly 12 kilometers north of Kostiantynivka, evacuation efforts continue as Russian drone attacks move closer. Residents describe constant aerial threats that have made daily life nearly impossible.

Despite Russia’s gradual territorial gains, its broader military campaign is showing signs of strain. Ukrainian long-range strikes targeting supply routes linked to occupied Crimea, as well as attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure, have disrupted logistics and fuel distribution. Russian-installed authorities in Crimea have declared a state of emergency over economic disruptions and temporarily suspended fuel sales to businesses and individuals.

Even so, Kremlin-backed Donetsk official Denis Pushilin dismissed concerns over the pace of Russia’s advance, arguing that the speed of territorial gains is less important than achieving Moscow’s strategic objectives. Meanwhile, Russian nationalist figures continue urging the Kremlin to escalate military operations and abandon U.S.-backed peace negotiations as Ukrainian drone strikes increasingly reach targets inside Russia, including Moscow.

As the conflict enters another critical phase, Kostiantynivka has become a pivotal battleground that could shape the future of Russia’s campaign in eastern Ukraine. While Ukrainian defenses remain intact for now, analysts warn that sustained Russian pressure and attritional warfare will continue testing Kyiv’s ability to hold one of its most important defensive positions in the Donetsk region.
