Russian forces launched a massive drone attack on Ukraine early Saturday, striking multiple districts in the capital Kyiv and causing injuries and damage in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. The overnight assault, which prompted air defence units to respond across Kyiv, underscored the continued intensity of the war even as diplomatic talks aimed at ending the conflict continue abroad.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that Russian drones hit at least two districts located on opposite sides of the Dnipro River, which divides the capital. Writing on the Telegram messaging app, Klitschko warned residents that “Kyiv is under a massive enemy attack,” urging people to remain in shelters as air defence systems worked to intercept incoming threats. Explosions were heard in several parts of the city as emergency services were dispatched.
Tymur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv’s military administration, reported that at least three districts were affected by the drone strikes. According to Tkachenko, the attacks sparked fires in a minimum of two locations, increasing concerns over civilian safety and infrastructure damage. He also cautioned that, alongside the drones, there was a continued threat of Russian missile strikes, adding to the tension across the capital.
In northeastern Ukraine, Kharkiv also came under attack. Mayor Ihor Terekhov said Russian drones targeted several districts in the city, injuring at least 11 people. He confirmed that drones struck a minimum of three residential buildings, highlighting the ongoing risk to civilians far from the front lines. Emergency crews worked through the aftermath to assist the injured and assess damage.
The renewed wave of Russian drone attacks came shortly after negotiators from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States concluded the first of two days of talks in the United Arab Emirates. These discussions are focused on finding a path toward resolving the nearly four-year-old war. Despite diplomatic efforts, the latest strikes demonstrate that the conflict remains volatile, with attacks on major Ukrainian cities continuing as negotiations proceed.
