SK Battery America, which was established by SK On as its production base in the United States in 2019, is set to open its IT facility in Georgia. The state governor’s office confirmed last week that the center’s launch is scheduled to take place later this month.
The opening of SK Battery America’s IT center is expected to create at least 200 tech jobs in the said state’s city of Roswell. This project is part of the company’s major investment in the territory, which also includes the building of two new electric vehicle(EV) battery production plants.
Yonhap News Agency reported that the IT facility would operate as a management hub for SK On's battery manufacturing plants in the U.S., including the facilities in Georgia. SK Battery America will invest about $19 million in the project over the next few years.
Aside from this project, SK On is also spending $2.6 billion for the construction of two lithium-ion battery manufacturing facilities in Jackson County. The products from these manufacturing facilities are to be supplied for EVs such as the Volkswagen ID.4 sports utility vehicle and Ford F-150 Lightning pickup trucks.
This is not the only investment of SK On as it is also building two other EV battery factories in a joint venture with Ford Motor. Their JV deal is worth $11.4 billion, and the facilities are set to rise in Kentucky and Tennessee.
Meanwhile, the new IT center of SK Battery America will be an integrated IT management hub that will serve all of the company’s battery facilities in the country. It is located at 1110 Sanctuary Parkway in Roswell, and hiring for IT experts in the area is expected soon.
“We are proud of SK Battery America’s continued growth here in the No. 1 state for business,” Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia said in a press release. “This innovative company continues to bring the jobs of the future that will benefit hardworking Georgians in manufacturing, and now it will also tap into the tech talent our top-ranking universities provide.”
SK Battery America’s head of information technology, Jason Choi, added, “We decided to open our IT regional center in Roswell to strengthen SK’s position as a leader in the battery industry, and it will help us build and operate an advanced manufacturing system in accordance with further expansion of battery production bases in the United States.”
