SK Telecom is entering the American broadcasting market by selling its next-generation broadcast solution that was built with mobile edge computing (MEC) technology to the Maryland-headquartered telecom and media company, Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc.
SK Telecom said on Tuesday, April 18, that it would provide the latest broadcast solutions to Sinclair Broadcast Group, a leading provider of local and sports news coverage in the United States. As per The Korea Herald, the South Korean telecom firm will furnish the latter with a form of Petasus Media that fuses CAST.ERA’s media applications.
CAST.ERA is Sinclair and SKT’s joint venture project that integrates telecom with media broadcasting tech development. On the other hand, MEC is the real-time processing of big amounts of data by devices and applications instead of a centralized data hub.
Using the MEC technology, SK Telecom created Petasus Media which combines SKT’s Media Edge Platform (MEC solution) and Dell’s PowerEdge servers. This allows central broadcasting systems to run local stations via cloud-based virtualization of the broadcast transmission base.
In the past, most broadcasters must buy and install new transmission equipment to add new features or amplify program streams. Today, with the availability of Petasus Media, new applications can now be remotely installed in the cloud of local stations from a central station. This system not only improves operational efficiency but lowers equipment costs as well.
“Through cooperation with Sinclair, a leading broadcasting company in North America, and Dell Technologies, which has a strong global sales network, we will drive next-generation broadcasting service innovation in the global market, starting with the U.S,” SK Telecom’s chief development officer, Ha Min Yong, said in a press release.
Sinclair Broadcast Group’s president of technology, Del Parks, also commented, “Working with our SKT and CAST.ERA partners to build a state-of-the-art technology platform will provide exciting new business opportunities for the broadcast industry.”
Finally, Kevin Gage, the chief operating officer of CAST.ERA stated that the launch of the Petasus Media platform would definitely speed up the introduction of new ATSC 3.0 services in both South Korea and the U.S.
