The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 will definitely sport various technical specification upgrades. But a recent filing to the Federal Communications Commission also hinted at a much better S-Pen, thanks to its new Bluetooth connectivity.
FCC filings typically do not have much to reveal about the respective gadget’s features and specs. These documents frequently just show where the FCC marking will be printed on the device.
However, in this case, the FCC application for the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 S-Pen (first reported by Droid Life) included a document titled “Bluetooth LE Test Report.” Meanwhile, one of the documents also directly indicated that the stylus is equipped with a 2.4 GHz Bluetooth LE module, which “may be used in close proximity to the user’s body.”
Reports are also certain that the device being described in the FCC filing is not just any other stylus but the S-Pen for Samsung Galaxy Note 9. Its model number is EJ-PN960, which corresponds to the upcoming phablet’s own model number SM-N960.
The functions that will arrive with the upgraded S-Pen were not discussed in the documents. However, known leaker Ice Universe revealed an array of use for the advanced stylus. Ultimately, the S-Pen is expected to support functions other than writing on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 screen.
Ice Universe claimed that the upcoming S-Pen “can be used to control a long-range self-timer, (and) control music playback.” This means that future owners of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 can stop or pause their Spotify while taking notes on the device.
Meanwhile, the South Korean electronics giant has not yet given away any hints about the upcoming phablet’s specs. But based on the company’s development cycle, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is most likely going to run with a better chipset than the predecessor, Galaxy Note 8. So fans can bet that regional variants of the upcoming phablet will be powered with either the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 or the Exynos 9810.
Last month, Samsung released a cryptic teaser that points to an earlier-than-usual launch of the Galaxy Note 9. The phablet is expected to be unveiled on Aug. 9 in New York City.
