Samsung is rumored to introduce a new camera array in the Galaxy S22 series, specifically the base and plus models. Both devices are expected to ditch the familiar 12MP main module for something that will offer higher pixels.
The base and plus models from the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S21 series feature 12MP sensors as their main cameras, while Samsung reserved the large pixels for the 64MP telephoto lenses. However, a recent report claims there is quite a significant change to expect in the coming year.
A leaker known as Tron reported that the base model Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ are planned with a new camera array that includes a 50MP main camera. Samsung fans may recall that the company unveiled the ISOCELL GN2 last February promised to offer bigger pixels measured at 1.4µm and 50MP capacity. The sensor can capture up to 8K images and supports a video frame rate of up to 480 FPS @ HD or 30 FPS @ 12.5MP. It uses a Dual Pixel Pro (PDAF) autofocus and a 1/1.12” optical format.
The same source, who also advised fans to take the details with a grain of salt, said Samsung is expected to use a 12MP ultra-wide lens. A 12MP telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom would complete the devices’ triple-camera module.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra has been speculated to feature a 200MP sensor next year. But Tron says the device will keep a 108MP lens for its main camera. There was no mention of the other lenses to be used in the next Ultra model, but its latest version also features 10MP periscope zoom, 10MP telephoto, and 12MP ultra-wide lenses.
Earlier this month, Samsung was also rumored to use different screen sizes for the base Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+. The devices are rumored to sport 6.1-inch and around 6.55-inch displays, respectively. The Galaxy S22 Ultra might retain a 6.8-inch and screen and could be the only one in the series to have a Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) panel.
It will take months before the Galaxy S22 series enters production, so the reported specs might still change. Samsung’s next flagship smartphone lineup is likely to be announced in early 2022.
