One of the speculated upgrades to be launched in the Samsung Galaxy S22 series is a new 200MP sensor. However, one of the most reliable leakers has reported that it is unlikely the case.
The prolific tech insider, known as Ice Universe, recently posted on Weibo with an update on the rumored camera upgrade. Unlike previous speculations, though, the leaker said it is “almost 100% confirmed” that the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will not launch with a 200MP sensor.
Instead of introducing an all-new 200MP camera, the company is reportedly planning to improve the ISOCELL HM3 sensor. This means the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra would still feature a 108MP main camera next year. But it would not be the same model that is currently available in the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Ice Universe reported that Samsung is looking to “polish” the third-generation 108MP sensor for the upcoming device.
Samsung started using a 108MP main camera and first introduced an “Ultra” model in 2019. The large-pixel sensor has since been exclusively available on the Ultra phone. One of the notable changes in the sensor between S20 and S21 is the addition of laser autofocus in the latter.
Details about the rest of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra’s rear camera array are still scant, but the company is also speculated to improve the periscope zoom sensor. SamMobile also takes note of reports that suggest the device could sport an under-display camera to achieve an unobstructed full-screen display, but Samsung fans will likely see this happen in the Galaxy Z Fold 3 first.
Aside from high-end cameras, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is also expected to have other exclusive features that would justify its high-end pricing and “Ultra” name. Leaker MauriQHD previously reported that some models in the 2022 smartphone series would sport slightly smaller displays. The standard device is rumored to ship with a 6.06-inch screen, while the Samsung Galaxy S22+ could sport a 6.55-inch display.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra’s screen size would be maintained at 6.8 inches, but it is expected to remain the only phone in the series that uses a low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panel. The Galaxy S22 series will likely launch in early 2022.
