Samsung’s reported plans for the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 3 might disappoint fans of foldable smartphones as it is expected to include a much smaller external screen. Meanwhile, the tech giant is also rumored to launch a total of three new foldable devices next year.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 design, specs, feature: What to expect
When the Galaxy Fold was first launched in 2019, some people were not big fans of its external screen. Aside from being smaller (4.6”) than the usual smartphone display size at the time, it also had unsually thick bezels. It was then a major upgrade when its successor, Galaxy Z Fold 2, was released earlier this year with a 6.2” cover screen. It also looked more current as it featured very thin bezels.
However, Samsung appears to be going back to where it started. The Elec reports on the analysis of UBI Research that suggests the Galaxy Z Fold 3 would sport a 4” cover display. It is unclear if it is also going to be designed the same as the first Galaxy Fold entry, which would not be on par with the appeal of the latest premium smartphones in the market. When the device is unfolded, the internal display will reportedly measure at 7”.
The same report did not mention any explanation as to why Samsung could be opting for a smaller external screen for the Galaxy Z Fold 3. However, other specs upgrades are anticipated including the S Pen support and low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LPTO) display adoption. The latter, if it turns out to be accurate, will allow the device to be more power-efficient.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 release date: Series to include a ‘Lite’ model in 2021?
In a previous report, Samsung is said to be planning a June 2021 launch for the Galaxy Z Fold 3. That is a few months earlier than the announcements of its predecessors in 2019 and this year.
There could also be more than one device to be released with the Galaxy Fold brand next year. The same research note suggested that Samsung could be working on a budget-friendly option Galaxy Z Fold Lite with similar display sizes as the standard model. However, the think tank predicts the Lite variant would be launched sometime in the first quarter of 2021.
