If it is about detective drama, “Sherlock” will surely be mentioned. In fact, it could even rank no. 1 since this is a world-famous show that was based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “Sherlock Holmes” book series.
Because it was so popular, it has been translated to films and TV series and one of the latest versions on television is BBC One’s show that is already in its fifth season. However, fans have yet to see “Sherlock” season 5 as production has stopped after the fourth installment.
It has been on hiatus for more than three years already and fans are hoping that the producers will finally begin filming for “Sherlock” season 5 and eventually release new episodes soon. Then again, it is unfortunate that the drama has not even been renewed yet, so at this point, there is no certainty if it will still return.
Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat’s latest update
These days, it is very rare for the showrunners and the cast to comment or speak about “Sherlock” season 5. Their silence even led to speculations that it has been canceled already. This is the easy assumption since there is also no renewal announcement from BBC One even after three years.
After years of waiting, fans were able to get fresh updates when the show celebrated its 10th anniversary on July 25. To mark the special day, showrunners Mark Gattis, Steven Moffat and producer Sue Vertue had a Q&A event. They answered questions sent in by the fans and everyone is happy even if they did not really announce anything about “Sherlock” season 5.
The event’s video was uploaded on YouTube by Sherlockology and followers could not get enough of it. Although they did not directly say if “Sherlock” season 5 is coming, there were hints that the drama is still on.
For instance, when the showrunners were asked if they have a particular Sherlock Holmes story that they would like to do in the future. They did not say anything and chose not to comment. It seems they have an idea that cannot be shared yet so fans are still happy with their reply.
Possibility for season 5: Martin Freeman’s thoughts
Martin Freeman is Dr. John Watson in the “Sherlock” series and for him, the finale of season 4 allowed them to pause the drama for a time. He said that the flow of the story did not indicate that it is already ending or there will be a follow-up soon so there is no problem with their long hiatus.
“The way the story went, in the last series, felt like, if not a full stop, then certainly a semi-colon or ellipses,” he told Collider. “It felt like a pause. It didn’t feel like something where we could just pop up the next year and go, ‘Hey, folks, we’re back.’ It felt a bit more momentous than that. Not final, necessarily.”
With his words, he seemed to have suggested that “Sherlock” season 5 would still be back. However, his casting as Dr. Watson is another story because Martin Freeman said he would only go back to the show if it is “something that was quite good and it would have to feel really, really special. It was that kind of show.”
