Despite the very long waiting time that fans have been subjected to, fans did not lose hope that they will still see “Shrek 5” in theaters. Needless to say, it is one of the most anticipated animated movies for years. A favorite since it was first introduced in 2001.
Movie cancellation
It was produced by Dreamworks, but the studio stopped producing it for a while until NBCUniversal bought the company. Under the new management, NBCUniversal wants to make Dreamworks popular again, so it made an order to produce the studios’ hit movies and “Shrek” was among those that were picked for production.
It was revealed that “Shrek 5” was actually confirmed for filming in 2014 and at that time, pre-production works have begun already. In fact, the script was completed after they hired Michael McCullers to be its new writer. He is the same one who wrote the story for “Austin Powers” and “Baby Boss,” and was chosen because NBCUniversal wants something unique.
They want “Shrek 5” to be fresh - give it a new theme and more thus it was confirmed that this movie is not a sequel but a reboot. Now, with all the pre-production works going on, this movie is apparently, not canceled.
Filming schedule and release date
Previously, “Shrek 5” was said to be coming to theaters in 2018 but this did not happen. In a new leaked report, it was mentioned that it would be released on Sept. 23, 2022, and if this is really the case, then filming could begin anytime this year. Animation has more work involved than regular production so it is possible to finish in two years.
However, in case of a delay due to the coronavirus crisis that is gripping the world right now, the delay also means that the release date would be moved. Perhaps, the new date would be in 2023.
Finally, NBCUniversal stated that “Shrek 5” will be something new and it will offer a story and theme that the younger generations could relate to. With that said, we all can expect a modern “Shrek” where the family could be living in the city now.
