It remains a big question when “Shrek 5” could be released. However, cast member Eddie Murphy previously offered an important update that could make fans of the animated movie franchise happy.
It was previously thought the “Shrek Forever After” was going to be the movie series’s happily ever after. However, several years since the movie premiered, DreamWorks Animation announced its plans to revive the franchise with a new movie that has been dubbed as “Shrek 5.”
‘Shrek 5’ release date: Eddie Murphy reveals possible 2019 or 2020 premiere
Even though it has been a while since the making of “Shrek 5” was announced, fans still do not know when the movie will actually hit the big screen. But in an earlier interview with Murphy, the actor said the movie was slated to premiere either in 2019 or 2020.
The year is almost over and the people attached to the production of “Shrek 5” are reportedly focused on other projects for the production company. Unfortunately, there is also no clear indication that it could be ready for release in 2020.
It should also be noted that Murphy’s statement dates back to 2016. DreamWorks has decided to make major production changes since then. Overall, it seems futile at this point to hope that “Shrek 5” could be released in 2020.
‘Shrek 5’ production, plot: Reboot with the original cast awaits?
Last year, it was confirmed that Illumination boss Chris Meledandri has been assigned to lead the production of “Shrek 5.” His studio is known for producing other animated box office winners such as the “Despicable Me” franchise that also gave birth to the equally popular spinoff “Minions” series.
The good thing about this is it serves as a confirmation that DreamWorks has not scrapped its plans of bringing “Shrek 5” to the big screen. But considering that Meledandri is also leading other major productions such as the “Super Mario Bros.” movie slated to premiere in 2022, Murphy’s return as Donkey could be delayed for a few more years.
The plot for “Shrek 5” is still unknown. However, Meledandri previously implied that his vision for the series revival includes bringing back Murphy and the other original cast member.
