Mobile app Signal is coming to Android.
PCMag reports that the entities behind the free encrypted calling and texting app, Open Whisper Systems, TextSecure, and RedPhone, merged to create Signal that would allow users to make secure calls and texts on Google’s mobile platform. Moreover, the app only requires the use of a user’s existing phone number and address book, doing away with separate logins, or PINs.
In a blog post, OWS founder Moxie Marlinspike wrote, "We cannot hear your conversations or see your messages, and no one else can either. Everything in Signal is always end-to-end encrypted, and painstakingly engineered in order to keep your communication safe."
Signal’s capacity to encrypt communication messages gained the sign of approval from no less than NSA data security whistleblower Edward Snowden. In a November 3 tweet, he wrote, “I use Signal every day. #notesforFBI (Spoiler: they already know).”
TextSecure users will reportedly expect an app update soon bearing Signal’s brand name, while RedPhone users will be prompted to download the communication encrypter app.
