‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ is described as a “double entendre”. Sony chairman Tom Rothman explained the real meaning behind the chosen title. Meanwhile, Tom Holland was spotted filming thrilling action sequences in Atlanta.
According to /Film, Sony chairman Tom Rothman enlightened waiting fans of the real meaning behind the title of Peter Parker’s latest big screen reincarnation. During an interview with IGN, he explained that ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ is really open to two specific interpretations.
Rothman said, “Here’s the thing I can tell you: We’re really, really fortunate on this because Marvel and Kevin Feige have really embraced the character and no one knows him as well as Marvel. It is another crown jewel of Sony’s for sure. But Homecoming, the name, is a double entendre on purpose, right?”
He added, “It’s relevant to the story because it takes place in high school and there is a scene — that I guess I can give a little thing — at a homecoming dance. I’ve actually seen the dailies of it because we already did the high school shooting of it in the first couple weeks and it’s fantastic. But it’s also a homecoming to Marvel. And a homecoming to the cinematic universe that Spider-Man belongs in. So it’s a pretty unprecedented deal between two studios, but we’re really proud of it. And all I can tell you is, those guys at Marvel — I think the technical term is — they know their sh-t.”
Spider-Man was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and was featured in numerous Marvel Comics publications. The first ever live-action film adaptation was made for television and aired in CBS in the ‘70s. Sony Pictures Entertainment then secured the rights to the character and hired Sam Raimi to direct the first big-screen trilogy ‘Spider-Man’, ‘Spider-Man 2’, and ‘Spider-Man’ starring Tobey Maguire in the titular role in the early 2000s.
Sony later hired Marc Webb to do the reboots ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ starring Andrew Garfield as the new Spidey. The two films were released in 2012 and 2014, respectively, and enjoyed financial success at the box office.
All of Sony’s ‘Spider-Man’ releases totaled $1.578 billion in the domestic box office alone, according to Box Office Mojo. Raimi’s trilogy grossed an estimated $2.5 billion worldwide while Webb’s earned over $1.4 billion in comparison.
Tom Holland is set to star in the lead role in his first ever standalone film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He was first introduced into the franchise in the recent ‘Captain America: Civil War’, where he took on the role of a teenage Peter Parker who was only learning about his superpowers before being recruited by Robert Downey Jr.’s Ironman to join his team.
Sony and Marvel’s reboot has been filming in Atlanta, Georgia since June 2016. The photographs posted on Comicbook Movie showed Holland – or his body double – filming some action sequences in full Spidey costume. He has also taken up a new type of transportation in the form of a bike and seems that he gives his web slinging powers a rest once in a while.
‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ is an upcoming superhero film based on the Marvel comic book character of the same name. It is directed by Jon Watts and written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein. It stars Holland, Downey Jr., Marissa Tomei, Martin Starr, Zendaya, Michael Keaton, and Donald Glover among others.
It is produced by Marvel Entertainment, Marvel Enterprises, Marvel Studios, Pascal Pictures, and Columbia Pictures and is distributed by Sony Pictures Entertainment. It is scheduled to be released on July 7, 2017.
