To say that the story of “Kingdom Hearts” is convoluted would be a massive understatement. Starting with the first installment of the franchise, the narrative has since become so tangled even the director gets confused at times. Tetsuya Nomura confirms this himself, noting that the story has become chaotic due to the numerous characters involved.
Anyone who has ever tried to write a story will know that putting the focus on as few characters as possible makes things much easier. In the case of “Kingdom Hearts,” the series has several prominent characters aside from the main ones; Sora, Donald, and Goofy. In a recent interview with The Verge, the franchise creator admits that it has become difficult to keep track of everyone’s roles.
“What is the most confusing is that, because there are so many characters in this storyline now, it’s hard to keep track of who actually met who already,” Nomura tells the publication. “I’m always like, 'Okay, so who knows who in this situation, and who’s meeting this person for the first time?’ And that always gets really confusing.”
If nothing else, it’s good to know that Nomura can at least appreciate what many fans of the series feel. There are veterans of the franchise who have played the first and second games but can no longer follow the story featured in the side games. In fact, it’s gotten to a point where the confusing plot might affect the enjoyment that gamers feel when playing “Kingdom Hearts III.”
As Windows Central notes, the general consensus among those who have seen or tried the game out is that "KH3’s" combat is a significant improvement compared to past installments. Unfortunately, it’s beginning to look like players will need to do some deep research just to get a grip on the story.
One of the main complaints of fans of the franchise over the years has been the confusing direction of the story. Who is doing what? Who is the real enemy? What’s the point of the struggle? These are just some of the questions where the answers are not so clear anymore.
