When T-Mobile announced its Digits service back in December, a lot of people were excited about the prospect of having just one phone number to use with all of their devices. At the time, it was still in beta but not anymore. The Uncarrier just announced that it is launching the service to all of its customers on May 31st and they can take advantage of it for free, at least, for the first number.
As Droid-Life explains, Digits is basically an upgraded version of a typical phone number. The best way to look at it is having a Master Key for all the rooms in the house instead of having just one key that opens only one door. That’s essentially what a regular phone number is like since it only opens one device.
With Digits, T-Mobile is offering users the option of having only one number that they can then use for multiple devices. Now, the types of scenarios that would benefit from this kind of setup are numerous, but the most common would have to be uniform access. For example, if users want their emergency contact to apply to all of their devices, be it multiple smartphones, landline, or tablet, they could.
Another example would be continuing a conversation via smartphone, laptop, and then tablet, which might seem ridiculous but is undeniably convenient. That’s basically what T-Mobile is offering to users; convenience.
Now, the original phone number that users have can be upgraded to Digits format for free, BGR reports. However, if users want more than one Digits number, they would need to cough up $10 for each new number they get. On the other hand, One Plus plan subscribers do get a second Digits number for free, so some customers are going to have the option to get two Master Key numbers if they wanted to.
