Taiwan’s military will begin a five-day combat readiness exercise this week as part of its broader military modernization strategy aimed at improving war preparedness and strengthening defense capabilities against growing pressure from China.

According to Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense, the “Immediate Combat Readiness Exercise” will run from Monday through Friday and focus on realistic combat scenarios rather than traditional scripted military demonstrations. The drill is designed to help military units improve operational readiness, battlefield awareness, and rapid mobilization in the event of a conflict.

Taiwan has increasingly adjusted its defense planning to reflect concerns that China could transform one of its frequent military exercises around the island into a real military operation. Beijing continues to claim Taiwan as its territory despite strong objections from the government in Taipei, while Chinese military aircraft and naval vessels regularly operate near the island.

The defense ministry said the exercise will involve actual troops operating on real terrain with deployed military equipment under realistic conditions. The training will focus on strengthening command and control systems, logistics support, battlefield preparation, and coordination among different military branches.

Officials stated that the exercise is intended to enhance the military’s ability to transition quickly from peacetime operations to wartime deployment while improving joint combat effectiveness.

The announcement came as Taiwan reported another significant increase in Chinese military activity near the island. The ministry said 21 Chinese military aircraft, including J-16 fighter jets, KJ-500 airborne early warning aircraft, and Y-20 aerial refueling planes, were detected operating around Taiwan.

According to Taiwan, 19 of the aircraft entered airspace southwest of the island and proceeded into the Western Pacific for long-range training missions. Taiwan’s armed forces monitored the activity and responded accordingly.

Taiwan continues to strengthen its military capabilities through regular training exercises and defense upgrades. Earlier this month, the island conducted live-fire tests of its U.S.-made HIMARS rocket system. Taiwan’s annual Han Kuang military exercises, the country’s largest war games, are expected to take place in August.
