Tesla has revamped its Model Y offerings, bidding farewell to the standard range rear-wheel-drive (RWD) model while introducing a longer-range variant for an additional $2,000. This strategic maneuver aligns with Tesla's commitment to innovation and responsiveness to consumer preferences, enhancing the appeal of its electric vehicle lineup.
Tesla Model Y Lineup Evolution
Tesla has announced a new variant of the Model Y, the Long Range Rear-wheel Drive, and discontinued the previous RWD model, which was previously the cheapest Model Y available in the United States, as per Electrek.
Tesla's prices have been shifting as usual lately, with the Model Y receiving a $2k discount just two weeks ago. That cut reduced it to its lowest price ever, at least when tax credits are considered.
However, Tesla has discontinued the standard-range RWD Model Y and replaced it with a longer-range model for an additional $2,000.
Tesla updated its website to include the new Long Range RWD Model Y, which starts at $44,990. However, like the previous model, it is eligible for the US EV tax credit, so if you qualify, you can purchase it for $37.5k instead.
The LR RWD variant began delivering in Europe early last month, so it's hardly surprising that it's now coming to America.
The new model is essentially the same as the old one but with a larger battery. The LR RWD has a range of 320 miles instead of the SR RWD's 260 miles. That's a significant increase for just $2k more, yet for those who don't require the range, the cheaper base price may have been preferable to keep.
That said, before April 19, the Model Y SR RWD cost the same as the LR RWD today. During the first quarter of the year, Tesla offered some temporary discounts. Still, despite pricing variations, you are now receiving a longer-range car for around the same price as you could have spent in the previous several months.
Consumer-Centric Innovation
Along with these upgrades, Tesla introduced a new Quicksilver color option for $2,000, only available on Long Range AWD and Performance variants.
This lighter gray/silver hue has a lot of depth. It's been available in Europe since 2022 and is often regarded as a pleasing hue. This is the first time it has arrived in the United States, while certain inventory cars have been available in color for the past week or two.
Tesla also claims buyers who purchased the 260-mile battery received a vehicle with additional concealed battery capacity. Tesla has done this before in the name of manufacturing simplicity: manufactured a single battery pack but limited some to lower ranges via software.
Tesla intends to sell software unlocks that will allow owners of the 260-mile SR RWD to add 40-60 miles of range, depending on their battery cells, for an additional $1,500-2,000. However, this idea still requires regulatory approval, so keep an eye out for updates.
