Tesla is reportedly starting limited trial production of the refreshed Model Y, codenamed "Juniper," at its Shanghai Gigafactory on October 22, according to a Chinese automotive blogger. The update follows the Model 3 "Highland" refresh and is expected to introduce similar enhancements to Tesla's best-selling vehicle.
Tesla's Best-Selling Model Y Set for Anticipated Refresh Following the Success of the ‘Highland’ Model 3
According to a Chinese automotive blogger, Tesla is reportedly gearing up to begin limited trial production of the refreshed Model Y, codenamed "Juniper," at its Shanghai factory on October 22.
Following the release of the overhauled “Highland” Model 3 in August, which introduced a new front-end, improved efficiency, and a quieter cabin, there has been speculation that the Model Y would soon receive a similar update. Though the Model Y is not as dated as the Model 3 was before its refresh, there is growing anticipation for an upgraded version, particularly among potential buyers who may be holding off their purchasing decisions in hopes of the refresh.
Being mindful that the Model Y is its best-selling vehicle globally, Tesla is prioritizing the refresh to maintain momentum in the market. While Tesla had previously stated that no Model Y refresh would come in 2023, the year is nearly over, and numerous signs of an impending update have emerged throughout the year. Camouflaged prototypes with a new front-end design resembling the “Highland” update and leaked photos of uncamouflaged vehicle parts have been spotted.
Tesla Begins Limited Trial Production of Model Y ‘Juniper’ Refresh, Full Rollout Expected in 2025
According to Electrek, the latest development comes from the Chinese blogger 胖虎Shawn (Fat Tiger Shawn), who shared on Weibo that trial production will soon begin at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory. However, initial production will reportedly be limited, with only 12 vehicles per day under strict control. As a result, it is unlikely that the refreshed Model Y will be available before the end of 2024, as Tesla will likely focus on meeting its Q4 targets with the existing model lineup.
Supply chain reports suggest that the full rollout of the refresh may come in Q1 2025, aligning with previous instances where Tesla introduced new models in China and Europe before North America. For example, the "Highland" Model 3 was released in Europe four months before the U.S. market, and this staggered release could be repeated with the Model Y.
While the exact details of the Model Y "Juniper" refresh are yet to be confirmed, many of the upgrades seen in the Model 3 refresh are expected to carry over. Spy photos show a similar front-end design, and the vehicle will likely benefit from enhanced aerodynamics, improved efficiency, and a quieter interior. The steering column stalks removed in the Model 3 refresh may also be eliminated in the updated Model Y. Those interested in purchasing a Model Y with the current configuration might want to act quickly.
