A Tesla Semi electric truck caught fire on a highway near the California-Nevada border, triggering concerns about the safety of electric vehicles and the need for an investigation.

Tesla Semi Fire Sparks Concerns

A CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit report indicates that an electric vehicle belonging to Tesla, the Semi, caught fire on a highway close to the California-Nevada border, Electrek shares.

Contrary to what you might expect from the media, there is no data to support the claim that electric vehicles are more prone to fires than vehicles driven by fossil fuels.

But they're still a new technology, and unlike gas-powered cars, electric ones can catch fire for reasons like a faulty battery in the Bolt EV. Those incidents clearly necessitate an investigation and report.

The news has just broken that an electric vehicle belonging to Tesla's class eight, the Semi, caught fire in California, not far from the Nevada border.

The initial report of the fire was made by the CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit:

Li-Ion Battery Fire Raises Questions

No crash was reported, although it is unclear how the fire started. The firefighter described the blaze as a "li-ion battery fire," but it is well-known that Tesla trucks transport battery packs from their Nevada facility to their Fremont, California facility. It is unclear if the truck or the contents caught fire first.

After what seemed like an eternity due to the fire, a hazardous material crew was seen salvaging the truck's remnants for Tesla:

Authorities Likely to Investigate Incident

Given the limited number of Tesla Semi trucks now operating, the majority of which are utilized for internal testing purposes, it is probable that the authorities will conduct an investigation into the incident if the truck in question caught fire independently.
