Tesla's stock received a major boost on Friday as RBC Capital raised its price target to $387, up from $323, citing increased confidence in the company's ambitious autonomous vehicle (AV) plans and its dominance over traditional automakers.
Autonomy at the Core of Tesla’s Valuation
In a note to clients, RBC analysts pointed to Tesla's advancements in Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology and its vertically integrated manufacturing model as key drivers of growth. Following a comprehensive tour of Tesla's Giga Texas facility in Austin, RBC highlighted Tesla's ability to scale its AV capabilities, which they say give the company a competitive edge over legacy internal combustion engine (ICE) manufacturers and newer EV makers.
Tesla's FSD technology, which recently introduced a hands-free version in the U.S., now represents a whopping $102 per share in RBC's valuation. The analysts expect growing consumer demand for premium AV features, particularly from robotaxi operators and high-end buyers, to fuel Tesla's long-term growth.
"We are raising our FSD pricing projections in later years," RBC said, emphasizing Tesla's ability to dominate the robotaxi market. The firm estimates robotaxi operations alone will contribute $136 per share to Tesla's valuation, underlining the potential profitability of Tesla's end-to-end ecosystem control, which includes software, vehicles, and applications.
The Robotaxi Revolution
RBC believes Tesla's AV ambitions position it to disrupt the ride-hailing industry, predicting potential partnerships with major players like Uber and Lyft to further expand market share. By leveraging its cost advantages through vertical integration, Tesla is expected to achieve superior profitability compared to competitors.
"Thanks to vertical integration, Tesla enjoys one of the best cost structures in the auto industry," RBC stated. This efficiency led the bank to increase Tesla's valuation multiple on vehicle revenues to 1x, further enhancing confidence in the company's ability to sustain its leadership in the EV space.
Challenges Loom on the Horizon
Despite the optimistic outlook, RBC acknowledged potential risks, including policy changes under a Trump administration that could impact EV incentives and regulations. However, the analysts believe Tesla's strong market position and innovation-driven strategy will help it overcome any hurdles and continue gaining market share from other EV manufacturers.
Wall Street’s Reaction
Tesla's stock has consistently been a topic of heated debate among investors. While the raised price target and RBC's reaffirmation of an "Outperform" rating have fueled bullish sentiment, skeptics argue whether Tesla’s lofty ambitions can translate into sustained financial returns.
The valuation hike underscores the growing importance of autonomous vehicles in Tesla's long-term strategy. Analysts and investors will closely watch Tesla’s execution on robotaxi deployment and further advancements in FSD technology as key indicators of its future success.
