It would appear that the confirmation of “The 100” Season 7 renewal of the show is the showrunners winning a particularly risky bet. Basically, there was a chance that the series would not be renewed for a seventh season and this would have been a problem for the story. It was admitted by the folks working on the series itself that the sixth season’s ending would not be “satisfying,” after all.
The confirmation for the renewal of “The 100” Season 7 occurred before season 6 had even aired. Showrunner Jason Rothenberg discussed his feelings on the matter in an interview with Collider. He even expressed surprised at the development.
“I was so surprised, on one level, but I also knew how excited everybody at the network was, about the episodes that they’ve seen, which is everything, at this point. I wasn’t surprised, on that level, but it’s a baller move to pick it up before it premieres. I’m really grateful for that. It also takes a lot of the pressure off of the overnight ratings for the premiere,” he said about the show’s renewal.
As for what fans can expect from “The 100” Season 7, Rothenberg noted that it was a chance for a more satisfying ending. Season 6 would not have worked as the conclusion to the finale.
“The ending of Season 6 is, in no way, shape or form, satisfying, as a series finale. I basically rolled the dice. I’ve had a good sense, for awhile, that it was probably gonna come back for another season, but I wasn’t asked to try to make this a season that could’ve functioned as a series finale. It certainly tees up another story, the way we often do, at the end of season, and in a way that really would have pissed people off,” the showrunner said.
In effect, the confirmation of “The 100” Season 7 being approved basically saved the show. Now, the writers can come up with a more satisfying ending.
