Bethesda game director Todd Howard finally offered an update on the development of “The Elder Scrolls 6” after three years since the game’s announcement. He did not provide anything specific, though, only implying that the development is still in very early stages.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Howard confirmed that the development of several projects “intertwine,” but the majority of their developers are still focused on “Starfield.” The studio’s newest IP – an RPG set in space – is not launching until Nov. 11, 2022.
Howard noted in the same report that the early announcement of “The Elder Scrolls 6” was Bethesda’s way of reassuring long-time fans of its commitment to making single-player titles following the release of “Fallout 76” that offers massive multiplayer gameplay. The next journey to Tamriel was announced alongside “Starfield” at E3 2018.
Since then, Howard and other Bethesda execs have been clear that “The Elder Scrolls 6” will not be released for years to come. The director of the series appears to reiterate that in the recent interview as he confirmed that “The Elder Scrolls 6” is still in the design phase. Howard also said the Creation Engine 2 was developed with both “Starfield” and “The Elder Scrolls 6” in mind.
“We’re checking the tech: 'Is this going to handle the things we want to do in that game?'”Howard added. “Every game will have some new suites of technology, so Elder Scrolls 6 will have some additions on to Creation Engine 2 that that game is going to require.”
Meanwhile, it can be recalled that fans believed they found an Easter egg in the latest “Starfield” teaser trailer that seems to suggest “The Elder Scrolls 6” will be primarily set in the Hammerfell region. This has been the widely speculated location of the upcoming game since 2018, however, the interview does not confirm if fans’ theory is accurate.
What Howard’s recent interview shows is that a specific release date or even a release window for “The Elder Scrolls 6” may not be revealed for years. Aside from “The Elder Scrolls 6” and “Starfield,” Bethesda is also working on an original IP based on George Lucas’s “Indiana Jones.” The project was announced last year, but the game director said it was pitched to Lucas back in 2009.
