As far as longevity is concerned, it is often attributed to the person’s diet. A new report reveals that a popular diet plan for weight loss may actually also help a person increase their life expectancy.
There are so many popular diet plans in the world today that many people, including celebrities, swear by or sometimes try and invite other people to do it as well. All these diets promise better health and weight loss, but Express reports that the keto diet, in particular, may also help a person live longer. A study was conducted among mice, who were following a diet that is low in carbohydrates. The researchers found that a low-carb diet like the ketogenic diet increased the life expectancy of the mice as well as preserved their memory function.
Another study involving the ketogenic diet and mice also showed similar results. The study concluded that a diet that is high in fat but very low in carbohydrates did not just increase the lifespan of the mice, it also revealed that the mice had lower midlife mortality rates and better cognitive function. According to Dr. Eric Verdin, who is the senior author on one of the studies, those two studies “reinforce each other because they both show the same global effect on healthspan.”
Trinity College Applied Science Professor Susan A. Masino also said that the keto diet “mimics the metabolic state of fasting or caloric restriction which has many similar benefits.”
The ketogenic diet may also improve a person’s overall health and contribute to weight loss. When it comes to weight loss, Express reports that intermittent fasting may help a person lose weight. This is one of the most popular weight loss tips in the world and it involves alternating cycles of fasting and eating. A lot of studies have backed this up as well, showing that fasting can improve a person’s metabolic health, aid in weight loss, prevent or reduce the risk of developing serious conditions and provide longevity.
Although the concept of fasting has been around for thousands of years, it is only becoming popular in recent times. As to why this is so popular is because it does not have restrictions on what to eat, but it puts more emphasis on when to eat. One example of how a person can do this is by eating their first meal at noon, and their last meal at around 8 p.m.
