Several photos and video trailers were recently released suggesting that “Tokyo Ghoul:re” season 2 will continue with Kaneki’s return. As ComicBook noted, the key visual shows the main protagonist is back to his knuckle-cracking mannerism and his original hairstyle suggesting that Kaneki has definitely taken over the control.
The latest video trailer for “Tokyo Ghoul:re” season 2 released on Monday also show Kaneki contemplating on some of his valued memories. Once he opens his eyes, there is no doubt that the one-eyed ghoul is back.
There were no significant changes between the manga and the anime adaptation, which made Kaneki’s return highly anticipated. It was only a matter of when such an important event is happening. And all clues certainly point to “Tokyo Ghoul:re” season 2.
Aside from the official teasers, fans may also recall that major hints were dropped about Haise remembering Kaneki in the “Tokyo Ghoul:re” season 1 finale. Eto, while attacking, referred to Haise as Kaneki then a rush of childhood memories came rushing through Haise’s mind. The flashback scenes eventually led to Haise reverting to being Kaneki in the events before “Tokyo Ghoul:re” season 2.
While Kaneki’s return is a hundred percent happening, “Tokyo Ghoul:re” season 2 is likely going to feature how the main protagonist concludes that he wants to continue life as Kaneki. In this trailer, Kaneki describes himself as “worthless, dorky, lame, indecisive, weakling.” But in the end, he declares, “Nonetheless, that is who I am.”
Some fans also noted that Kaneki will initially doubt that going back to his true identity is the right decision. The main protagonist will likely need to sort out whether he really wants his hard-to-control ghoul persona. And this can be an interesting story to briefly explore in “Tokyo Ghoul:re” season 2 considering how Kaneki’s story ended in the manga.
There are still more than 100 episodes to cover for the 12 episodes remaining in the final anime installment of the franchise. “Tokyo Ghoul:re” season 2 premieres on Oct. 9.
