U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has been appointed as a special envoy to Greenland, a move that has reignited global attention on the strategic Arctic territory and its geopolitical importance. The announcement was made via Trump’s Truth Social account, where he emphasized Greenland’s role in U.S. national security and international stability.
According to Trump, Landry “understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security” and will work to advance U.S. interests for the safety and security of allies worldwide. The White House did not immediately comment further on the appointment, nor did the Greenland Prime Minister’s Office respond to media inquiries.
Jeff Landry, who assumed office as Louisiana governor in January 2024, confirmed the role on X (formerly Twitter). He described the position as a volunteer role and stressed that it would not interfere with his responsibilities as governor. Landry also reiterated his strong support for Trump’s long-standing position that Greenland should become part of the United States, calling it beneficial for both nations.
Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in Greenland over the years, citing its strategic location, military significance, and rich mineral resources. Greenland, while largely self-governing, remains a territory of Denmark. Both Greenlandic and Danish leaders have consistently rejected the idea of Greenland joining the United States.
The appointment comes amid ongoing diplomatic sensitivity. Earlier this month, the United States and Greenland pledged to maintain “mutual respect” in their relations. However, Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt recently stated that U.S. remarks about Greenland have caused uncertainty among local residents. She emphasized the importance of restoring trust and maintaining open dialogue to ensure continued cooperation, which has lasted for more than 80 years.
As global interest in the Arctic continues to grow due to security concerns and natural resources, Trump’s decision to appoint a special envoy to Greenland is likely to remain a closely watched development in U.S.-Greenland relations.
