U.S. President Donald Trump backed Libya’s transition toward national elections Sunday while urging an end to illegal migration through the country and renewing Washington’s commitment to stronger bilateral ties.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said the United States would support efforts to bring Libya’s institutions together, strengthen bilateral ties and help the country move toward national elections. He presented those steps as part of Washington’s commitment to Libya.

Trump cited counterterrorism cooperation and joint efforts against ISIS (Daesh) in Libya, which he called a common enemy of the two peoples. He said the United States respected Libyans and their sacrifices in that fight.

He described Libyans as “proud, resilient, hospitable, and deserving of peace and prosperity.” Trump also said Libya should no longer serve as a route for illegal migration, adding that it “must end now.”

Trump closed by expressing hope for a peaceful, prosperous Libya that could govern itself.
