U.S. President Donald Trump's envoy, Keith Kellogg, met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Kyiv, but no clear progress was made in easing tensions between the allies. Trump, who is pushing for a quick resolution to the war, recently accused Ukraine of starting the conflict and referred to Zelenskiy as a "dictator."
Vice President JD Vance signaled optimism for a ceasefire, while National Security Advisor Mike Waltz criticized Zelenskiy's response, urging him to discuss a minerals deal tied to security guarantees. Trump is keen on securing Ukraine’s mineral resources for the U.S., but Kyiv previously rejected proposals lacking strong security assurances. Reports suggest a simplified deal may be under consideration.
European leaders, wary of Trump’s stance, are boosting defense spending and exploring a U.S.-backed European peacekeeping force in Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron plans to press Trump to maintain a firm stance on Russia. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte emphasized the need to prevent further Russian advances.
On the battlefield, Russian forces continue advancing along the 1,000-km front, controlling a fifth of Ukraine. Ukrainian officials fear a ceasefire could allow Russia time to regroup, though military intelligence suggests a truce might happen this year.
Trump’s claim that Zelenskiy is a dictator stems from Ukraine’s martial law, which postponed elections. Some opposition figures back Zelenskiy, arguing elections are impractical during war. However, former President Petro Poroshenko, recently sanctioned, has remained silent.
As tensions grow, Ukraine faces political divisions while defending against Russian aggression. With Trump prioritizing diplomacy and investment, the future of U.S.-Ukraine relations remains uncertain.
