U.S. President Donald Trump is set to headline a major rally at Washington’s National Mall on Saturday as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, concluding weeks of events that have sparked debate over the growing politicization of Independence Day commemorations.

The annual July 4 festivities traditionally attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to the nation’s capital. This year, attendees faced heightened security, extreme heat reaching 102 degrees Fahrenheit (39 degrees Celsius), and the threat of thunderstorms. Several parades and outdoor activities were canceled due to the weather, while long lines formed at security checkpoints as people waited for access to the National Mall ahead of the evening fireworks display.

Despite the challenging conditions, museums, gift shops, and restaurants near the Smithsonian Institution reported near-record sales as visitor numbers increased throughout the week.

Among those arriving in Washington was the white nationalist group Patriot Front, which announced its presence on social media. Hundreds of members were seen traveling on D.C. Metro trains, although local authorities reported no incidents of violence.

Trump has promoted his appearance at the Lincoln Memorial as "the most spectacular TRUMP RALLY of them all," continuing his practice of combining official national celebrations with campaign-style events. Unlike most previous presidents, who largely avoided taking center stage during Independence Day festivities, Trump has made the 250th anniversary a signature political event.

The Trump administration's Freedom 250 organization has taken the lead in organizing the celebration, replacing much of the role previously assigned to a bipartisan commission established in 2016. The National Mall has been transformed into a "Great American State Fair," featuring a Ferris wheel, exhibits from conservative organizations, and displays by defense contractors intended to highlight American innovation and achievement.

However, the celebrations have drawn criticism. Several Democratic-led states declined to participate, while some scheduled performers withdrew over concerns that the event had become too partisan. Freedom 250 has also faced criticism for promotional exhibits that some say emphasize a religious interpretation of American history while minimizing issues such as slavery and racial injustice.

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found that most Americans believe the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations have become overly political, including about three-quarters of Democrats and roughly half of Republicans. Meanwhile, Trump’s broader effort to reshape Washington ahead of the anniversary has produced mixed results, with renovation projects across the capital receiving praise in some areas but criticism over unfinished work at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
