The Secret Service is also entitled to the same perks as the first family, being the ones who have to accompany the President and the First Lady wherever they go. However, a new report reveals that the Trump Organization overcharged the Secret Service for their stays by a big amount contrary to what Eric Trump claimed.
Eric Trump previously claimed that the Secret Service gets to stay at the Trump properties for free. Trump continued to claim that the most the Secret Service agents get to pay would be $50. However, contrary to Eric’s claim, a set of documents obtained by The Washington Post and Public Citizen revealed that it was not the case at all. Apparently, the Trump properties have charged the Secret Service $396 a night for 177 rentals at the Mar-a-Lago resort ever since he became president.
To add to that, the Bedminster golf club owned by Trump charged the Secret Service agents $17,000 a month in renting a cottage there. They continued paying for it even after Trump left.
It should be noted that some Trump properties usually charge up to $650 per room, and the report revealed that the public taxpayers spent up to $471,000 on Trump properties. The Secret Service was asked to pay a lot more, like an additional $157,000 since Trump became president, bringing the total to over $628,000. This means that the Mar-a-Lago resort charged the Secret Service double than what they usually charge the Department of Veteran Affairs officials.
This is a big contrast to Trump’s predecessors, who would usually let the Secret Service stay at spaces at their properties for free. Knowing that the president often stays at one of his properties aside from the White House, there has been no indication that the Secret Service agents were charged as little as $50, contrary to what Eric Trump claimed.
Meanwhile, Trump will not be attending the annual bipartisan St. Patrick’s Day lunch at Capitol Hill. Vice president Mike Pence has also declined the invitation, making it the first time in 30 years since the founding of the event that both the president and vice president are going to be present. According to the White House announcement, it was due to Trump’s frayed relationship with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that prompted them to decline the invitation.
