At least 12 people were killed and 90 wounded after Russia launched its largest missile and drone attack on Kyiv this year, devastating buildings and sparking fires across the Ukrainian capital. The assault drew a rare rebuke from U.S. President Donald Trump, who posted on Truth Social: “Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying. Let’s get the Peace Deal DONE!”
Speaking at the White House, Trump said the strikes were “not necessary” and came at a “very bad time” as peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine showed signs of progress. Trump emphasized that both sides are under U.S. pressure to reach a deal, noting the Kremlin made a “pretty big concession” by showing willingness to halt its full occupation plans. “This next few days is going to be very important,” Trump said. “I think we’re getting very close.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told CBS News the talks were “moving in the right direction,” though more work is needed. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte confirmed that Ukraine is engaging constructively, suggesting the next step lies with Moscow.
The strike damaged 13 locations across Kyiv. Emergency crews, using dogs and climbing specialists, worked through rubble where mobile phones could still be heard ringing. Forty fires broke out following the missile barrage. Ukrainian officials said a North Korean KN-23 ballistic missile may have been used.
President Zelenskiy accused Russia of using the air raid to mask increased ground offensives, particularly in eastern Ukraine. Seven other regions, including Kharkiv and Zhytomyr, also suffered missile damage.
Trump warned he would end U.S. efforts if progress stalls, noting Ukraine’s stance on Crimea complicates talks. Meanwhile, his envoy is scheduled to meet Putin directly on Friday.
