President Donald Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after a heated Oval Office meeting on Friday, leading to the collapse of a widely expected U.S.-Ukraine minerals deal. Trump stated on Truth Social that Zelenskyy was "not ready for peace" and accused him of using U.S. involvement as leverage in negotiations.
The meeting, initially intended to secure U.S. access to Ukraine's rare earth minerals, fell apart after tensions rose between the two leaders. Trump expressed frustration over what he saw as a lack of gratitude from Zelenskyy for U.S. support in Ukraine's war against Russia. He warned that Zelenskyy was "gambling with World War Three" and accused him of disrespecting the U.S.
Vice President JD Vance’s remarks about the need for diplomacy to end the war reportedly sparked further disagreement. Trump emphasized his desire for peace, stating, “He can come back when he is ready for peace.”
Despite the fallout, Zelenskyy took to social media platform X to express appreciation for the visit, thanking the U.S. government and citizens for their continued support. "Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that," he posted.
The breakdown of the minerals agreement marks a significant setback in U.S.-Ukraine relations, adding to growing diplomatic tensions.
