Dustin Poirier has just fought in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 242 event against Khabib Nurmagomendov earlier this month. However, the American mixed martial artist is already out there looking to fight another formidable opponent before 2019 ends.
UFC news: Dustin Poirier offers Tony Ferguson a match
Tony Ferguson is the latest UFC fighter that Poirier approached online for his possible next match. However, Ferguson clearly wants to face a different mixed martial artist – Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Last week, Ferguson fired up a tweet calling on the attention of Nurmagomedov and UFC President Dana White for a UFC 245 proposal. The official rankings agree there is no one else Nurmagomedov should fight next other than Ferguson. “The Eagle” also previously said “nobody” but Ferguson “deserves” to fight him next after he defeats Poirier, which he did earlier this month in UFC 242.
However, there are several factors why the Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson fight might not happen in UFC 245. For one, the Russian fighter has just fought in a blockbuster match earlier this month, and UFC 245 is already set on Dec. 15. Additionally, the event will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada, where Nurmagomedov vowed never to fight again.
The undefeated lightweight champion called out the process that Las Vegas authorities did in deciding his and Conor McGregor’s fine following their post-fight brawl in 2018. These could be the same reasons that motivated Poirier to chime in on Ferguson’s tweet and volunteered to be his opponent in December.
UFC rumors: Dustin Poirier stirs up Conor McGregor rematch speculations
This is not the first time that Poirier seemingly volunteered himself to fight in UFC 245. In the previous week, “The Diamond” is also seemingly making an effort to rile up fans into demanding for a Poirier vs. McGregor rematch in December. The UFC lightweight stars first fought at UFC 178 in 2014 where the Irishman won via knockout in the first round.
I think me and Conor running it back makes a lot of sense at this point.

McGregor is still retired from the UFC, but fans are expecting him to return soon. When Poirier seemingly challenged him to a fight, the Notorious actually responded implying he is open to making it happen under some conditions. “You should have spoke [sic] my name with a bit more respect ... McGregor is the goal! Always! Say that now and I’ll think about it,” McGregor replied.
