The US House Select Committee investigating the January 6 riots at the Capitol has amassed troves upon troves of evidence on coordinated efforts to overturn the 2020 elections. Democratic Rep. Jackie Speier recently called on the panel to present its findings to the public.
Speaking on MSNBC Saturday, Speier, who is a known survivor of the 1978 Jonestown Massacre, was pressed by host Ayman Mohyeldin on whether she thought the panel should issue a statement following the report by CNN that revealed the text messages sent to Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows by Republican Rep. Chip Roy.
“I don’t know that they should absolutely respond to texts that somebody got out,” said Speier, who is retiring this year following the midterm elections in November. “And I would suggest the important thing of this point is to get this information in front of the American people.”
“And I think they’re poised to actually open these hearings and be made aware of the documents they have, the recordings they have. The American people have a right to know at this point,” Speier added.
CNN obtained the text messages sent to Meadows by Roy and Republican Senator Mike Lee not long after the 2020 elections in November through early January of 2021. From the text messages, both Roy and Lee lobbied and encouraged the Trump White House to pursue its efforts to overturn the election and remain in power.
In Lee’s messages dating November 7, 2020, the Utah Senator said that there is a third option that would exhaust legal efforts while cooperating with the presidential transition. Lee asked Meadows to forward a letter to Trump signed by the Utah Republican and other several members of Congress, including GOP Reps. Andy Biggs, Mike Johnson, and Brent Bozell, as well as names of leaders of some political organizations.
“We the undersigned, offer our unequivocal support for you to exhaust every legal and constitutional remedy at your disposal to restore Americans' faith in our elections. This fight is about much more than this election. This fight is about the fundamental fairness and integrity of our election system. The nation is depending on your continued resolve,” said the message.
