The results from this week’s primaries are in, revealing what may or may not be a surprising turnout for Joe Biden. The former vice president was revealed to win all three primaries that voted this week.
Politico reports that former vice president Joe Biden has secured wins from three more states - Illinois, Arizona, and Florida when they held their respective primaries this week. Biden won by a big margin against Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders in Florida, winning by over 40 points. He continued the streak in the two other states, emerging as the sole winner in all three this week despite the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The results would put Sanders way behind, but the senator does not intend to bow out anytime soon. However, even with the concerns of the global pandemic hitting the United States, Sanders would need to pull major upsets in the upcoming primaries over the next several weeks in order to catch up to Biden’s wins. Coincidentally, the results might increase the pressure on the senator to ultimately bow out and for Biden to assume the Democratic nomination by the party’s national convention.
Ohio was originally supposed to hold its primary this week as well, but in a last-minute attempt decided to postpone the primaries until June due to the pandemic. Following the results, Biden did another online address to his supporters from his home also noting how he is complying with the federal guidelines in social distancing.
Along with social distancing, Biden has also upped his security as it was previously reported that the former vice president received Secret Service protection. Former vice presidents are still able to have Secret Service protection for six more months since leaving office, meaning Biden’s already ended by mid-2017. However, due to the coronavirus concerns as well as the incidents involving protesters disrupting his rallies may have prompted the need for more security.
The Secret Service has since confirmed the report in a statement. “The U.S. Secret Service can confirm Acting Secretary of Homeland Security, Chad F. Wolf, along with the Congressional Advisory Committee has authorized that the Secret Service provide physical protection for presidential candidate, Joseph Biden.”
Biden’s Secret Service code name will reportedly be “Celtic,” which is the same code name he used when he was vice president.
