US election series: Trump takes on NATO

Republican Party’s nomination aspirant and front runner Donald Trump, yet started another set of controversies and this time it is surrounding NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). He is well known for his prominent controversies, such as banning Muslims from temporarily entering US, building walls over Mexican borders, war of words with pope, use water boarding as a torturing to extract information and target families of terrorists, even kill them.

But some of his criticisms and controversies have greater geo-political implications, beyond domestic waters.

In the very latest, Mr. Trump questioned US role in NATO. He suggested US should focus more on its domestic problems than other parts of the world. He questioned, US presence in Asia, which is in clear contrast to Barrack Obama’s additional focus on Asia, while speaking to Washington Post. Moreover he suggested the trouble in Ukraine affects other countries more than US, so other should share the greater financial burden - “Why is it that Germany’s not dealing with NATO on Ukraine?”

“Why are we always the one that’s leading, potentially, the third world war with Russia?”

While his comments might cheer peace lovers, war opponents, faced heavy critics former NATO chiefs and foreign policy analysts – “It would be a dream come true for Russia and China.”

Later Mr. Trump clarified that he wants U.S. to pay less as the country is paying disproportionately.

Despite all the criticism, Mr. Trump may have a point, US expenditure on defense has gone up, while European countries have reduced their budgets.

Mr. Trump’s rise is slowly becoming from domestic to global phenomenon, posing risks of changes in global political structure.
