President Trump took a jab at the General Motors, which was on the verge of bankruptcy during the 2008-09 ‘Great Recession’ and was rescued using taxpayers’ money after the company announced that it would be closing down four car manufacturing plants in the United States as part of a broader restructuring plan. The plants will be closed in Maryland, Ohio, and Michigan. Both Ohio and Michigan voted for President Donald Trump and his ‘America first’ agenda back in 2016 as the then-candidate Trump promised to bring back jobs which were lost due to China’s entry to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and unfair trade practices. GM’s announcement has been an embarrassment for the President, who touted that his policies, which includes tariffs on imports were are bringing companies back to the United States.
The President called on GM to halt its plan and bring a new line of production back to these states and he threatened to cut all subsidies to GM unless the plan is revised, “Very disappointed with General Motors and their CEO, Mary Barra, for closing plants in Ohio, Michigan and Maryland. Nothing being closed in Mexico & China. The U.S. saved General Motors, and this is the THANKS we get! We are now looking at cutting all @GM subsidies, including.... ....for electric cars. General Motors made a big China bet years ago when they built plants there (and in Mexico) - don’t think that bet is going to pay off. I am here to protect America’s Workers!”
