Ukraine enters its fourth year of war with Russia, facing mounting challenges as U.S. support wavers. Former President Donald Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, calling him a “dictator” and urging a quick peace deal. Meanwhile, Washington has opened direct talks with Russia in Saudi Arabia, excluding Ukraine and Europe.
With the U.S. refusing to send troops as a security guarantee, Ukraine looks to European allies for support. Zelenskiy has held numerous calls with European leaders, urging unity. Many are expected to visit Kyiv to mark the anniversary of the war, which has displaced over six million Ukrainians and caused catastrophic military losses.
On the battlefield, Ukrainian troops struggle against superior Russian forces while uncertainty looms over continued U.S. military aid. Army medic Evhen Kolosov described the troops as psychologically exhausted after years of relentless fighting.
Amid shifting alliances, Ukraine is exploring closer ties with China and India while trying to maintain U.S. relations. A proposed deal granting the U.S. access to Ukraine’s mineral wealth is under negotiation, with Trump seeking massive repayments for past aid. Zelenskiy rejected an initial draft, citing unfair terms and a lack of security guarantees. Trump hinted that access to Starlink, crucial for Ukraine’s military, could be restricted if a deal isn’t reached.
Trump has also pressured Ukraine to hold elections, aligning with Russia’s stance questioning Zelenskiy’s legitimacy. In response, Zelenskiy suggested he would step down if it secured Ukraine’s NATO membership. Despite the turmoil, his approval remains above 50%, with many Ukrainians rallying behind him.
As the war drags on, Ukraine faces an uncertain future, navigating political shifts and diplomatic challenges while continuing its fight for survival.
